When insulation breaks down, windings short, connectors loosen, or boots carbon-track, the spark leaks to ground instead of firing the plug. The OBD-II system monitors these conditions and may store a misfire or coil-circuit DTC. The code points to a cylinder or circuit, but additional testing is required to separate a bad coil from issues like a worn spark plug, low compression, or an injector fault.

For example, oil in a spark plug tube from a valve-cover gasket leak can cause arcing that mimics coil failure. Likewise, a damaged harness or a failing coil driver in the PCM can interrupt primary control. Common Causes of Ignition Coil Failure

Ignition coils can fail for multiple reasons. Below are frequent causes and how to address them before they lead to bigger problems.

Heat, Vibration, and Age

Under-hood heat and constant vibration fatigue the coil’s windings and insulation. Over time the epoxy can crack, internal shorts can form, and the coil may break down under load or after a hot soak, creating intermittent misfires.

If one coil fails on a high-mileage vehicle, others may be near the end of their service life. Testing all coils and replacing worn boots with OE-quality parts can prevent repeat visits.

Oil or Coolant in Spark Plug Wells

Leaking valve-cover gaskets or tube seals allow oil into the spark plug wells. Some engines can also seep coolant near the plugs. Fluid in the well contaminates the boot, causes carbon tracking, and lets the spark arc to ground.
